About Our Teachers

The Studio Classroom Educational Resources Team is made up of professionals with decades of combined teaching experience. We are dedicated to using our experience, training and expertise to help you become a better English teacher.

Meet our current team members:


Doris Brougham, L.H.D. (Honorary), L.L.D. (Honorary)
Dr. Doris Brougham has been a friend and English teacher to Asians for over half a century. Founder and international director of Studio Classroom, she is also the editor-in-chief of Studio Classroom, Let's Talk in English, and Advanced. Known and loved as Teacher Peng Meng-Hui, Doris has made a positive impact on thousands of people through her teaching, kindness and generosity. Having lived in Asia for over 50 years as an educator, publisher, editor, social welfare promoter, public speaker, and musician, Doris loves people and is passionate about teaching.
 
 
Ruth Seamans Devlin, M.A.
Ruth Seamans Devlin has been with Studio Classroom since 1983. She writes monthly articles for Studio Classroom and Let's Talk in English and supervises the writing of weekly and monthly tests that are distributed to schools. Prior to joining Studio Classroom, Ruth was a music teacher. Though she has moved on to the world of English teaching, playing her trumpet still brings Ruth joy. Ruth telecommutes between Taipei and Bozeman, Montana, where she lives with her husband, Drew, and their dog, Reilly. Ruth visits Taipei regularly to train teachers, present at the Taipei TESOL conference, and enjoy authentic Chinese food.
 
 
Barbara Stewart, B.A.
Barbara Stewart, coordinator of the Teaching Services team, has been with Studio Classroom since March 2000. She began her teaching career over 25 years ago. After taking time off to be a full-time mom to three daughters (two of whom have appeared on Let's Talk in English), she continued her career in education. Barbara now commutes between Taichung and Taipei, where she coordinates our Teaching Services program.
 
 
Phil Archer is originally from North Carolina, U.S.A. He received his Masters in TESOL from Azusa Pacific University in California. Phil has taught English to students of all ages in Los Angeles as well as southern China and central Taiwan. At Studio Classroom, Phil writes articles for Studio Classroom magazine and teaches on Advanced radio. He also conducts teacher-training workshops for Chinese English teachers and enjoys meeting students at school rallies.
 
 
Steve Marth, B.A.
Steve Marth obtained a degree in History from Nyack College in New York City. Since graduating he has spent most of his time working with Chinese students, from primary school children to adults continuing their education. Steve works with Studio Classroom in radio and television production. He teaches, acts and records for Studio Classroom and Advanced. When Steve's not teaching English, he enjoys working in music and video production.
 
 
Troy Peterson, M. Div. / Th. M.
Troy and his family moved to Taiwan in 1991. Before coming to Studio Classroom in 2000, Troy worked with Trans World Radio to produce a daily English broadcast program. He has enjoyed working with Hazel and Thomas on Let's Talk in English and is currently teaching on the Advanced magazine's radio program. He also teaches vocabulary on the Studio Classroom television program. Between recording, Troy teaches English to various organizations in and around Taipei city. He enjoys connecting with local people and building friendships in the community.
 
 
Wilma Tan, B.A.
Wilma Tan has been with Studio Classroom since 1980. She is TESOL-certified and has experience teaching adults, college and high school students. She has taught at schools in Seattle and Taiwan. Wilma has also been giving teaching demostrations and workshops since 2002. Wilma likes to use activities and games in her classroom. She believes creating a relaxed English-speaking environment starts from "learning by doing."
 
 
Hazel Johansen, M.A.
Hazel Johansen has been with Studio Classroom since 1993. A graduate of the University of Maryland in Graphic Design, Hazel also holds a graduate degree in Educational Technology from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. At Studio Classroom, Hazel is involved in radio and television production as well as being on the teacher services team. A popular teacher, actor, speaker, teacher trainer and scriptwriter, she enjoys motivating people and using creative ways to teach.
 
 
Hazel Johansen, M.A.
Liz Archer has taught ESL to students from various backgrounds and age groups in Los Angeles, Beijing, Shanghai, and locations in Taiwan. She holds masters degrees in TESOL and Intercultural Communication. As a member of Studio Classroom's Teaching Services team, Liz conducts ESL training seminars for Chinese teachers who teach English. She enjoys sharing her teaching experiences with others. Liz also writes features for Let's Talk in English and is involved in radio and TV production for Studio Classroom and Advanced magazines.
 
 
Hazel Johansen, M.A.
Rachel Sawatzky holds a B.A. in Language Arts and was a high school communication arts teacher for four years in west Michigan, USA. She was also the drama director at the high school and directed a spring play each year, so she enjoys incorporating dramatic activities into daily lessons. Rachel earned her masters degree in TESOL from Grand Valley State University in 2003. Her job at Studio Classroom includes training teachers, acting and recording for the radio and TV programs, and working on the magazines. She enjoys using creative approaches and methods in the classroom and will always be "a teacher at heart."
